Tutorial #1

Okay, someone asked for a tutorial for this icon:

... So here it is :]

I don't remember EXACTLY what I did but I'm going to try to duplicate this icon. I use Paint Shop Pro X but it should work in any PSP program, I've never used Photoshop so I have no idea if it works there, sorry.

Okay, right now I'm having a hard time finding the original picture so I'm just going to use a different cap, but you'll get the idea, lol.
First, I took my base & cropped it the way I wanted it. You don't want to crop it to be 100x100 since half of the icon will be a texture. You just want the height to be 100px. So here's what I did..

For colouring.. I'm just going to show you a basic colouring I do. It's not the same as the icon before but it's nice for this particular cap.
Duplicate your base & set to softlight. Go to Adjust> Brightness/Contrast> Highlight/Midtone/Shadow. Set it to 80-80-80. That will give you this...

Next, I duplicated my base again, brought it to the top, & set it to screen.
Then make a new layer & flood fill it with #0f2a73. Set the layer to Exclusion around 80%. Now you have...

Now you want to make another new layer & flood fill it with #ff0000, set to Softlight around 30%.

One last new layer. Flooded with #a9e2fd, set to Softlight, about 55%. That gives us...

Last step for colouring... You need to Copy Merged (Ctrl+Shift+C) what we have so far & Paste as New Layer (Ctrl+L). Set the layer to Burn around 80% opacity. You have...

So now we're going to create a New Image.. 100x100px.

Take this texture by peoplemachines & Paste as New Layer in your 100x100 box.

Now take your cropped image & paste it as a new layer over the texture so that you have something like this...

Now your going to resize your original seperate image to about 21x31, like this...

Now go to Adjust> Hue/Saturation> Hue/Saturation/Lightness & put the saturation on -100.

So you're going to take that & paste it as a new layer on the 100x100 box. Duplicate it so you now have two of them. Layer them so one's directly under the first one, like this...

Okay now you get to add textures. You can pick any you want really, just to match the picture. First I took this one from Carton. Before adding it to the icon, I resized it to this..

Then I added it to the icon & went to Image> Free Rotate & rotated it about 7.00 degrees to the right. After that it gets a little blurry to I go to Adjust> Sharpeness> Unsharp Mask & put the settings on Radius: 1.00, Strength: 50, Clipping: 2. You want to have that layer UNDER your original image & possibly even the tiny desaturated ones. Now you can place it wherever you want. I have...

We're almost done. :] Now, your going to take this texture also from Carton & resized it to this..

Paste it as a new layer to your icon & bring the layer under the pictures again, then rotate it & sharpen it the same as before. You may want to rotate it to the left instead & more degrees. It's whatever you want. Then place it how you like.

Now you can go back to the very top & make a new layer. I took a tiny heart brush in #f2cd78 & placed it on top of the desaturated images. You can also add a small text brush to the right side if you want but in this icon I didn't. & here's the finished product.. :]

I hope that was helpful to some people! I know it was long & I tend to babble a lot so ask any questions if you don't understand something! & I'll be making a tutorial for another icon in my last post soon. :]
